Yelena Barbalich: Biography

Born 1975 –
Wellington, New Zealand.

Yelena is unable to explain her creative processes due to her impairment. However it is evident by looking at her extensive body of work that she is constantly developing and experimenting with media and designs. She never erases or reworks, she accepts her art as it flows out of her with complete confidence.

Triangles can ripple in nets, radiate like suns, and branch into streams. She can switch between the delicacy of a single ink tendril showing the way for a shoal of lines, to large choreographed fields of rhythm and color. Though barely able to write her name, she ‘writes’ intricate patterns. Her work is complex as she layers and juxtaposes patterns and color.

Yelena is a self-taught artist driven to engage in creative processes that are uniquely hers, and hers alone. Since 2001 she has been coming to Art Compass Studio-Gallery where she makes her art in the company of peers (impaired and non-impaired artists), while she continues to work at home.Exhibitions:
